Norman Nicholson Festival 2007

Saturday 20 October
10.00 am – 3.30 pm

in the Guide Hall, Millom

Talks, Exhibition and
Award of Poetry Competition Prizes

Directions to the Guide Hall
By Train
Trains to and from Millom are operated by Northern Rail on the Cumbrian Coastal line.

By Road
From the north, as you come to the centre of Millom, you meet a mini-roundabout, with a filling-station on your left. Go straight ahead, across the railway bridge and straight on past Lancashire Road on your left, the old town hall square on your left, and NatWest and HSBC banks on your right. Pass St George’s Terrace on your left. The narrow turn for the Guide Hall is the immediate next turn on the left, at the pelican crossing, opposite Barclays Bank which is on your right. The Guide Hall is just a few yards down on the right. There is some parking space there. If the spaces are full, there is a car park a couple of minutes’ walk away, next to the Somerfield supermarket on Lancashire Road.

From the east and south: meet the mini-roundabout as above, and take the left turn over the railway bridge, then follow the directions already given.

(If in any doubt, you’ll be able to see the very tall spire of St George’s Church from a long way off. If you head for that, you’ll find yourself in the right area of Millom!)

Advance Booking for the day is essential

South Cumbria Poet Laureate Goes International!

Maggie Norton, South Cumbria Poet Laureate 2007, will represent Cumbrian poets at the 7th International Poetry on the Lake Festival in Italy in October. Funded for this project by Arts Council England, she will read her own work and speak about contemporary poets in the Lake District.

“I’m really excited about the Italy project. It’s such a wonderful opportunity to bring Cumbria to an international poetry scene,” said Maggie. “British poets going include Carol Ann Duffy, John Hartley Williams, Christopher North and Mario Petrucci, whom the Word Market literary organisation brought to Ulverston three years ago.”

Her latest publication, The Bundle on the Dresser, is the story of a Cumbrian sheep farmer. He wants his son to follow him on the farm, then foot and mouth disease arrives. She wrote the piece after a commission to work with Cumbrians affected by FMD in 2001. U. A. Fanthorpe, the acclaimed poet whom Word Market will bring to Ulverston next February, described it as ‘Very moving – this story and its theme are sustained in tight powerful pieces’.

Maggie has collaborated with Key Advice (www.keyadvice.net) videographer Kate Harrison Whiteside to make a podcast and video of The Bundle on the Dresser. Kate filmed Maggie reading the poem with Neil Curry, poet and editor of Norman Nicholson’s ‘Collected Poems’, and Peggy Savage. The film supports the reading with stunning images of the Lake District fells. The pamphlet and DVD are on sale at The Tinner’s Rabbit Bookshop, Ulverston, and the pamphlet at Swarthmoor Hall and Gleaston Mill.

!! Ian Davidsons' New Book Has Launched and Landed at The Tinners' Rabbit !!

A Hatful of Crows- Culture and Anarchy in Broughton Mills
By Ian Davisdon

This sequel to the notorious Dynamiting Niagara continues the story roughly ten years later, follwing the author and his principal characters into the 1960's. Electrictity and the pill are but two of the new influences to hit the residents of Broughton Mills.

Reluctantly our hero enters gainful employment and soon becomes a criminal, a husband and a father.

As you would excpect from Ian, perceptive sardonism veins throughout, as his gentle slide into an early retirement amongst his beloved landscape awaits.

Beatrix Potter Biog' takes Lakeland Book of the Year Title

A biography of the famous children’s author and illustrator Beatrix Potter has won the Lakeland Book of the Year title 2007.
Beatrix Potter: A Life In Nature, was an eight-year labour of love for US author Linda Lear, who also becomes the first ever American to win the Lake District’s most prestigious literary prize.

Overall there were five category winners with the Beatrix Potter book taking the main prize in a year which has seen interest rocket in the children’s author following the release of the film MISS POTTER starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor.

We also would like very much to give our congratulations to June Whitehead from Kirkby Lonsdale for gaining 3rd place in the Saint and Co Business and Industry section with her book Lost Children – Ulverston Workhouse in the 19th century. (Published by Liz Drew's Handstand Press).

The Bookshop at The Tinners Rabbit was overwhelmed with the success of this book, as it rapidly becoming our best seller.
Lost Children continues to create high demand and praise from our customers.

Northern Lights by Gladys Hobson and Bob Taylor & guest authors

An interesting mix of stories and poems, from light laughter to dark humour, charming tenderness to heavy drama. All this adds up to a book that can be picked up and read through, or used to while away a few spare moments, whether travelling, on holiday, or at home.
Altogether, the book displays a considerable diversity of thought and ‘voice’.
The illustrations add further interest.

Tempus Publishing Brings Us "Ulverston"

Tempus Publishing's latest book in the "Images of England" series is "ULVERSTON". Well known local historians, Carol Bennett and Peter Lowe have put together a collection of approximately 200 archive photographs accompanied by captions, depicting the changing face of Ulverston over the years. The book describes the streets, shops, pubs, industries and the people who formed the heart of the town's strong community.

The Illustrated Guide to the Holiday Resorts of the Furness Railway

This is the greatly awaited and lavishly illustrated facsimile of the classic guide, first published in 1900 by Furness Railway.  Made extant once more by the people of Handstand Press,  The Illustrated Guide to the Holiday Resorts of the Furness Railway, Illustrating and describing the districts adjoining, is arguably one of the two best publications by the Furness Railway.

It takes the reader on a tour of Furness Railway towns, including Kendal, Grange, Carnforth, Ulverston and Dalton, describing not only beauty spots and tourist attractions, but the important shops and businesses of the time. Copiously illustrated, it is a wonderful record of Furness life in 1900.

The Furness Railway opened in 1846 when a main line between Dalton-In-Furness and Kirkby-In-Furness was brought into service. During it's lifetime it was instrumental in the development of the mining and shipbuilding industry of South Cumbria, of tourism, and towns such as Barrow-In-Furness and Grange Over Sands. In 1923 it was aquired by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company.

This reprint of a very scarce original will strongly appeal to students of Cumbria and Lancashire social history and collectors of local railway memorabilia. It is the ideal Christmas present for those who love all things redolent and for the hopelessy atavistic!  A real gem.
